Casa San Juan - Fernanda Vargas, September 2018

Casa San Juan - Joshua Woolls, september 2018
This home was the highlight of our vacation. We woke up early every morning and went down to the pool where I would relax and spend time cleaning the leaves out(pool is surrounded by trees) which I actually enjoyed and found relaxing and then myself and the kids would swim for a few hours and watch the birds and lizards in the garden. We would then walk to a restaurant for brunch and do some shopping. After we were done we would come home and get back in the pool for a few hours until we were hungry and then we would go back out to another restaurant. When we came back we would put the kids to bed and my wife and I would relax by the pool for a few hours. Rinse and Repeat for most of 7 wonderful days. Staying in this wonderful colonial home was not just a highlight of our vacation it was a highlight of our life. Never have I enjoyed time away as much as I enjoyed our time in Merida. That being said, I think that people should be aware of what this home is and what it isn't. Casa San Juan is a huge old colonial in Merida. It is a 100+ year old grand home that although it is gorgeous and well appointed it is NOT A RESORT. And although it is very close to the city center it is a couple of blocks outside of the hip/trendy area. It is on a busy street in the middle of a bustling city area and many of the homes/businesses in the area are not a reflection of this home. There are noises and smells(food carts, etc...) that might be off-putting to some people. Parking is confusing and I never really did get a good answer as to where I was supposed to park, but I parked in the lot behind the house(North side of Calle 71) and never had an issue. I was not sure if I was supposed to pay(I didn't) and never had an issue and no one said anything to me. Heads up, it is probably easier to Uber when traveling in Centro than to drive and worry about parking. Most of my Uber trips were about $1.25 and I would tip $1... Took a cab once and it was twice the cost. We also walked a lot and the people were always friendly and we never felt unsafe. And we walked a lot in Centro near the park at night and never felt unsafe there. Also, this Grand old home had some issues that we may not have expected. There was a bat problem. A fruit bat would come every night and set up residence in the foyer and snack on some fruit. Unfortunately he didn't clean up behind him and I had a mess every morning to clean up. Also, walls need some attention where he has made a mess on the walls.
