Mejorada
Mejorada
Home to some of Merida’s oldest and most beautiful colonial homes, Mejorada and San Cristobal serve as an intersection of microcultures - where Merida’s hip art and architecture students hang out next to the police force performing their morning exercises. You won’t see many other gringos over this side of town, just a lot of local culture and life.
People watch in Mejorada square under the shade of giant flamboyant trees. Watch the church ladies sell traditional cornbread in front of the cathedral, students flirt and canoodle on the park benches, or the line of day laborers who hang out on the north side of the square offering on the spot moving services to people driving by. In this same barrio you can eat at Los Almendros, an old and traditional restaurant where you can try local specialities such as queso relleno, relleno negro and poc chuc.
On the east side of Mejorada, and past the "Arch of the Dragons" on Calle 61, you'll find yourself in Chen Bech. This is an up and coming neighborhood where many expats are starting to renovate homes for their winter stays in Merida. Quieter than Mejorada, the homes are a little bigger and have more gardens, trees and birds. Chen Bech has its own food market so you can shop locally for that nights dinner.
The joy of living on this side of town is that you’re a short walk from both Merida’s main square and colonial era downtown and mercado Lucas de Galvez, Merida main food market. Great for walks in the evenings as well as access to the freshest fruit, vegetables and seafood in the city.
